What to Look for in a Driving Instructor in Lerwick
Not all driving instructors are equal. Here is what every learner in Lerwick should check before booking their first lesson.
DVSA ADI Badge
Every qualified instructor must display a green ADI badge in their windscreen. Always check this before your first lesson — it is a legal requirement.
DBS Checked
All Reliant instructors hold a current enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check, giving you complete peace of mind.
Dual-Control Vehicle
Your instructor's car must have dual controls — a second brake pedal on the passenger side. This is essential for your safety during lessons.
Patient & Supportive
The best instructors adapt their teaching style to you. Look for someone who explains clearly, stays calm, and builds your confidence progressively.
Flexible Availability
A good instructor can offer lesson times that fit your schedule — mornings, evenings, or weekends — without long waiting lists.
Strong Pass Rate
Ask about first-time pass rates. Reliant instructors consistently achieve above the national average across all test centres.
Understanding the ADI Badge
Every DVSA-approved driving instructor in Lerwick must display a badge in their windscreen. Knowing what each colour means protects you as a learner.
Green Badge — Fully Qualified ADI
Has passed all three parts of the ADI qualifying exam. This is who you want teaching you.
Pink Badge — Trainee PDI
Still working towards full qualification. Can teach under supervision for up to 6 months. All Reliant instructors hold green badges.
