Motorway driving isn't covered in your standard driving test — but it's where most new drivers feel least confident. Our DVSA-approved instructors will take you on the motorway safely, in a dual-control car, and teach you everything you need to know.
The driving test doesn't include motorways — which means most newly qualified drivers have never driven on one. That's a problem.
Motorway driving is NOT covered in the standard driving test
Smart motorways have changed the rules — most drivers don't know them
Motorway accidents are more severe due to higher speeds
Learners who practise motorways before their test are more confident drivers
Pass Plus includes a motorway module — combine and save
Every motorway lesson is structured around the 6 key skills you need to drive on motorways safely and confidently.
Mastering slip roads, matching motorway speed, and safely exiting at junctions without disrupting traffic flow.
Understanding the keep-left rule, when to overtake, and how to use lanes 1, 2 and 3 correctly and safely.
All Lane Running (ALR), variable speed limits, overhead gantry signs, and what to do if a lane is closed.
What to do if your vehicle breaks down — emergency refuge areas, hard shoulders, and calling for help safely.
Driving in rain, spray, fog and reduced visibility at motorway speeds. Stopping distances and when to slow down.
Using headlights correctly, managing glare from oncoming vehicles, and maintaining awareness in low-light conditions.
Smart motorways use technology to manage traffic flow and reduce congestion. But the rules are different — and many experienced drivers don't know them properly.
70mph
National speed limit on motorways — but variable limits can reduce this to 60, 50 or 40mph
Red X
Ignoring a Red X closed lane sign carries a fixed penalty fine — always obey mandatory signs
Yes — since June 2018, learner drivers in England, Scotland and Wales can drive on motorways, but only with a DVSA-approved ADI in a dual-control car. You cannot use a private supervisor for motorway practice.
Most learners benefit from 2–3 motorway lessons to build full confidence. Your instructor will assess your progress and recommend the right number for you.
No — you can take motorway lessons as a learner, before your test. We recommend you are reasonably confident on dual carriageways first.
Motorways (M-roads) have a national speed limit of 70mph, no cyclists or pedestrians, and specific rules around hard shoulders and smart motorway technology. Dual carriageways (A-roads) can have lower speed limits and different rules.
We cover motorway lessons across the UK — Scotland, England and Wales. Our instructors are locally based and will drive to the nearest motorway access point from your area.
