Question 1

How old do I need to be to start driving lessons?

Accepted Answer

You can start driving lessons on public roads from age 17. However, you can begin learning in a private area (such as a car park) from age 16 if you hold a provisional licence.

Question 2

Do I need a provisional licence before my first lesson?

Accepted Answer

Yes. You must have a valid provisional driving licence before you can drive on public roads. Apply at gov.uk — it typically takes up to 3 weeks to arrive. Bring it to your first lesson.

Question 3

How do I book my first lesson?

Accepted Answer

Call our free number 0800 994 9090, WhatsApp us, or use the booking form on our contact page. We'll match you with a local DVSA-approved instructor and arrange your first lesson.

Question 4

What should I bring to my first lesson?

Accepted Answer

Bring your provisional driving licence (both parts if you have a paper licence). Wear comfortable shoes with a firm sole — flip flops and heels are not suitable for driving.

Question 5

Can I learn in an automatic car?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We offer both manual and automatic lessons. Note that if you pass your test in an automatic, your licence will only cover automatic vehicles. Most learners choose manual for greater flexibility.

Question 6

How many lessons will I need?

Accepted Answer

The DVSA average is 45 hours of professional lessons plus 22 hours of private practice. Most learners need between 30 and 60 hours depending on their starting ability, how regularly they practise, and how often they have lessons.

Question 7

How long is each lesson?

Accepted Answer

Standard lessons are 1 or 2 hours. We recommend 2-hour lessons where possible — it takes time to warm up at the start and consolidate learning at the end, so longer lessons are more efficient.

Question 8

How often should I have lessons?

Accepted Answer

Ideally 2–3 times per week. Regular lessons help you build on what you've learned before the memory fades. Learners who have lessons once a week or less tend to need significantly more hours overall.

Question 9

Can I have private practice between lessons?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and we strongly encourage it. Private practice with a family member or friend (who must be 21+ and have held a full licence for 3+ years) significantly reduces the total number of professional lessons you'll need.

Question 10

What if I don't get on with my instructor?

Accepted Answer

Contact us and we'll arrange a different instructor. A good instructor-student relationship is important for learning — we want you to feel comfortable and confident.

Question 11

When am I ready to take my driving test?

Accepted Answer

Your instructor will advise when you're ready. As a guide, you should be able to drive independently, perform all manoeuvres confidently, and consistently make safe decisions in a variety of road conditions.

Question 12

How do I book my practical driving test?

Accepted Answer

Book at gov.uk/book-driving-test. The test fee is currently £62 on weekdays and £75 on evenings and weekends. Your instructor can advise on the best test centre for your area.

Question 13

Can I use the instructor's car for my test?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Your instructor will accompany you to the test centre and you'll use their dual-control vehicle. This is included in the lesson price for your test day.

Question 14

What happens if I fail my test?

Accepted Answer

You can rebook immediately. Your instructor will review the examiner's feedback with you and focus your remaining lessons on the areas where you need improvement. Most learners pass within 2–3 attempts.

Question 15

What is the pass mark for the driving test?

Accepted Answer

You can have a maximum of 15 minor (driving) faults. Any serious or dangerous fault results in an immediate fail. The examiner will explain the result and any faults at the end of the test.

Question 16

Do I need to pass my theory test before booking a practical test?

Accepted Answer

Yes. You must pass your theory test before you can book a practical driving test. Your theory test certificate is valid for 2 years.

Question 17

What does the theory test involve?

Accepted Answer

The theory test has two parts: a multiple-choice section (50 questions, pass mark 43/50) and a hazard perception section (14 video clips, pass mark 44/75). Both must be passed in the same sitting.

Question 18

How do I prepare for the theory test?

Accepted Answer

Use the official DVSA revision materials and our free theory test practice tool at reliantdrivertraining.co.uk/theory-test. Aim to practise daily for 4–6 weeks before your test.

Question 19

How much does the theory test cost?

Accepted Answer

The theory test currently costs £23. Book at gov.uk/book-theory-test.
